THE EIGHT KOANS OF ISSHINRYU

By any name, “The Code,” “The Eight Precepts,” or “The Eight Koan,” these incredible sayings are the backbone of the martial arts. Taken from the Eightfold Path of Zen Buddhism, they create questions that stimulate the mind and prepares a karateka for his journey to black belt. Each koan studied takes a karateka closer to that goal. These eight koans are part of the 4 part silk diplomas issued by Shimabukuro Tatsuo Sensei. Upon completion of the eight koan a student will be presented with silk replicas of his rank as given to Harry G. Smith. The next koan will not be available until the karateka is tested and passes the requirements.
