SHADES OF ISSHINRYU
A pyramid group picture

Agena, Okinawa
1957
Taken just after the move from Kyan, home of the
first dojo, these students were the last of the first generation. At
this particular time the students were required to assist in the
building of the dojo walls. The gate had not been completed yet and
the photo clearly shows the most important training tool, lost
somewhere on the path to modern day training, the double posted
makiwara.
Sitting is Steve Jewouse (?), on his left, holding
Sensei, is Harry G. Smith. To Smith's left is student Hall, possibly
a sergeant at the time. The other two remain unknown until
verifiable identification.
